This Privacy Policy explains how Better Century collects, uses, stores, and protects your personal data, and outlines your rights in relation to that data.

Duty of care
We recognise our duty of care in relation to your personal data and are committed to handling it responsibly. This includes protecting your privacy, preserving anonymity where possible, storing data securely, and giving you meaningful control over your information.

Better Century exists to improve how resources are used and shared, creating conditions in which all life can thrive. Respecting your data and privacy is a fundamental part of that mission.

When you provide information to us, for example by joining the platform or completing questionnaires, it helps us improve the relevance and quality of what we offer. Aggregated data also allows us to understand what works well across the site, helping us improve Better Century for everyone.

What data we store
We collect and process data subject to your choices and permissions, and where we have a legitimate interest in doing so. This processing benefits both you and Better Century.

Data we store for all users
This applies whether or not you register an account.

  • IP address, cookies, and device identifiers, used to recognise your browser and device
  • Page browsing information, to improve relevance and performance
  • A unique Better Century reference number linked to the topics and content you view or create. This helps us understand interest areas and improve content relevance
  • Analytics data collected via Google Analytics. IP addresses are anonymised before processing. Google may use cookies as described in its own privacy policies
  • Ads viewed or clicked and searches made on the site, to improve relevance
  • Optional product or service ratings where explicitly consented to and only with trusted organisations

 

We do not require your name or postal address to use Better Century, and the platform can be used without providing them.

Data we store for registered members

  • Username, encrypted password, and email address to enable account access
  • Communications with moderators or administrators via email or private messages
  • Records of moderation actions where relevant

 

We do not sell email addresses and do not send newsletters or bulk communications unless you explicitly opt in.

Optional data for registered members

  • Profile information you choose to provide during registration
  • Email permissions and newsletter preferences
  • Private messages you choose to send
  • Information provided during surveys, panels, competitions, or product tests, where consent is explicitly requested each time

 

How we use your information
We use collected information to:

Visibility of posts and profiles
Content posted on Better Century may be publicly visible and accessible via search engines. This openness supports the platform’s purpose of sharing knowledge and ideas widely.

You should consider this visibility when posting content or choosing a username or profile image. Personally identifiable information shared publicly may be visible to anyone.

Registered users can view profiles showing public posts and optional profile information. Email addresses are never publicly visible.

Administrators and moderators may view posts alongside registration data where required for moderation. Access is restricted to trained, authorised individuals.

Permissions and how we contact you
You can update your profile information, email preferences, and visibility settings at any time through your account.

You may also request deletion of your account by contacting an administrator.

Cookies

Protecting your data
We comply with the UK Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, and relevant privacy legislation, and aim to follow both the letter and spirit of the law.

Data is stored securely using reputable hosting and security infrastructure, including network firewalls and denial of service protection. Access is limited to authorised personnel only.

Data retention
Data is retained only as long as necessary for its intended purpose.

  • Server logs containing IP addresses are retained for up to 90 days
  • IP addresses linked to registered users may be retained for up to five years
  • Deleted user accounts are fully removed within two years
  • Competition data is retained for a maximum of three months

We regularly review and delete data that is no longer required.

Data breaches
If a data breach occurs, affected users will be informed promptly. Where required, we will report incidents to the Information Commissioner’s Office and other relevant authorities.

Third parties
We do not sell or trade personal data.

Trusted third parties may support site operations under strict confidentiality agreements. Personal data is never shared for third party marketing or advertising purposes.

Better Century is intended for users aged 13 and over. If you are under 13, you should not use the site.
